Packaged with Love
The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, having a disastrous impact on the environment, a close second to the oil industry. And each day, as new fast fashion brands emerge in the market, this damage increases. It is shocking that an industry that sparks so much joy in us with clothes that make us feel wonderful has the complete opposite impact on the environment. We find ourselves at crossroads today where taking the right step in the right direction might just be one act away.
At Buna, we have been ingrained with the idea of questioning this paradox by asking ourselves, at each step, how can we do better. While we work with fabrics that are created by hand, employing the artisanal sector in India, and have minimised our waste at each stage by recycling our scraps, we pushed ourselves to think more on what can be done to raise the bar ever further. This brought us to our packaging design.
Each time you buy a Buna garment, it is not only made with the utmost love and attention but is also packaged with the same responsibility - a responsibility to the sustainable choice you made as well to the environment. The garment that you purchase is first carefully folded into a bag made of unbleached cotton in its natural colour with an envelope-like closure. We urge you to repurpose this sturdy bag as a garment or shoe bag, finding a home for it in your closet. The tags that are fastened to the garment are made with seed paper and contain the instructions on how you can plant them to add some blossom to your gardens at home. Up until very recently, we were also using plastic bags that are earth-friendly and are oxo-biodegradable. But each day, as we come across something new and learn more, we strive to enhance our packaging further. Hence, we recently made a decision to switch from this biodegradable plastic to corn starch poly bags which when added to a compost, completely turn to manure in a few weeks. All our international and domestic packages of love leave our studio in corrugated cardboard boxes, avoiding the need of single-use plastic flyers for the package. As we come across new advancements in sustainability, we work towards improving our practices further to minimise waste and make a conscious choice for you as a buyer and us as producers.
So go on, take home a Buna and plant a seed to grow with us.
