Craft, Culture and community

Founded in 2017 as an internet-first and direct-to-community label, Buna embodies a slower and more mindful way of dressing rooted in culture, craft, and community. Existing at the intersection of local and global, traditional and contemporary, Buna creates thoughtful clothing shaped by natural fabrics, artisanal processes, and quiet femininity.

OUR AESTHETIC

The name Buna translates to “handwork,” forming the foundation of our slow-paced and mindful aesthetic. Each garment is crafted in natural fabrics that celebrate breathability, softness, lightness, and ease. Through fluid silhouettes, tactile textures, and thoughtful details, we hope to evoke feelings of familiarity, nostalgia, and serenity — much like the warmth of home, the scent of the ocean, or the stillness of nature.

Designed to be felt as much as worn, Buna garments are created for women drawn to softness, simplicity, and timeless beauty. Our world is one of subtle pastels, airy forms, and clothing that moves gently across seasons, landscapes, and everyday rituals.

Our Vision

At Buna, sustainability lies at the heart of everything we create. For us, the process is as important as the product. Our story is a collective narrative shaped by the artisans, weavers, dyers, and makers whose shared craftsmanship forms the soul of Buna.

Our fabrics are custom-made in small batches by artisanal communities across West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Gujarat before being carefully handcrafted in our Delhi studio with thoughtful finishing and detail. Each garment is made slowly and intentionally, designed to become a cherished part of the wearer’s story over time.

Buna is the brainchild of Pallavi Shantam, a graduate of NIFT whose love for Indian textiles, slow fashion, and sustainable design found expression through the brand. Through Buna, she creates soulful narratives inspired by nature, memory, craftsmanship, and the quiet poetry of everyday life.

PROUDLY SUSTAINABLE

Buna emerged as a response to a rapidly changing world and a growing need for more mindful ways of creating and consuming. We believe sustainability is not an alternative, but a responsibility.

Our work is rooted in natural materials — mulmul, handwoven cotton and silk, handspun merino wool, linen, and chanderi — sourced from craft clusters across India. We design our textiles and block prints from scratch, working closely with artisan communities to create fabrics that are thoughtful, tactile, and enduring. We work exclusively with natural, biodegradable fibers, consciously moving away from synthetics in favor of materials that are breathable and gentle on the environment.

Each garment is produced in limited quantities, often made to order, to reduce excess and avoid waste. Artisanal techniques such as hand weaving and block printing remain central to our process, while our packaging is fully biodegradable — using compostable plant-based materials, reusable cloth bags, and seed tags made from post-consumer cotton waste.

Process

Our process is slow, deliberate, and deeply rooted in Indian craftsmanship. Every collection is thoughtfully designed with nature and its changing seasons in mind. While fabric remains the essence of a Buna garment, colour becomes its soul.

Many of our garments remain in their natural kora form — untouched by dyes and celebrated in their raw, earthy beauty. Others emerge in soft pastels inspired by fading sunsets, summer skies, wildflowers, and winter light. Through these quiet palettes and fluid forms, Buna seeks to create clothing that feels timeless, calming, and enduring.

"At Buna, we embrace the beauty of slow living and the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship. Every piece we create tells a story of mindful design, meticulous handwork, and sustainable practices. Our garments are not just fashion; they are a celebration of nature, tradition, and the timeless art of creation."
